THIN LINE

Short movie – Drama – 20 min – Germany 2025

When their eight-year-old daughter falls into a coma after a tragic accident, Eva and David are consumed by grief. While David clings to hope, unwilling to let go, Eva cannot bear to see her child suffer and takes matters into her own hands – sparking a gripping courtroom battle over guilt, mercy, and the limits of love.

„Thin Line“ is a deeply personal film. From the very beginning, I knew I didn’t want to offer easy answers. The film explores moral dilemmas, guilt, and responsibility, but above all asks the fundamental question: Who has the right to decide over life and death? It is a story about love, responsibility, and loss – and about what happens when two people face the same reality, yet arrive at very different truths.

At its heart, the film follows a mother who believes that letting go can be the last act of care, and a father who clings to hope – not only for his daughter, but for himself. What does it mean to let someone go? What does it mean to remain faithful to them? „Thin Line“ unfolds in the gray zones where law and morality, reason and emotion, can no longer be clearly separated.

The debate around end-of-life decisions is highly restrictive in many countries, meant to prevent abuse but often leaving families in profound suffering. A recent example is the case of Archie Battersbee in the UK, whose parents fought for months to keep their son on life support, ultimately losing in every court. Their struggle ignited a wide public debate and revealed the impossible choices families face when personal conviction collides with legal frameworks.

With this film, I do not want to pass judgment but to evoke an experience – one that is deeply unsettling and therefore necessary to tell. „Thin Line“ seeks to awaken empathy and to shed light on the moral and legal gray areas where affected families find themselves. It is about revealing the human faces behind the debates, the emotional realities beyond black and white, beyond simple verdicts. In the end, this is not only a film about death, but about life – and the moment we may have to let it go.

„Thin Line“ aims to be more than just a film; it is a call for reflection and discussion. I want to encourage audiences to engage with the complex facets of assisted dying and to critically examine them.
